Robotics of the Future
Project
During the last century, aviation has experienced great changes not only in the aerodynamics but also in their energy optimization. However, it has appeared recently a new research line that will provide a completely different view to the future of the air vehicles: Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles. Most of the best companies of the world are investing their capital and resources to invent and find the best design of F.W.M.A.V. However, at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department from The University of California, Irvine, it has begun a new Project that attempts to go further. F.W.M.A.V. Project’s goal is to improve the D.A.R.P.A.’s design, by designing, building and flying a new Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle that is capable to hovering. In case you want to know more about the Project, there are some information below:
As it has been said before, F.W.M.A.V. is a Project whose goal is to create the F.W.M.A.V. However, it is more than that. High Technology challenges, Team working and professional work are some of the values of this project.
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has been and will be a reference for the F.W.M.A.V. Project. Our goal is to improve their great research on flapping wing air vehicles, trying to control also the pitching angle.
The goal of this project is to design, build, and fly a flapping-type micro air vehicle that is capable of hovering (similar to large insects). However, there is a strategy to succeed. Just have a look to it and give us your opinion!
The University of California, Irvine
More than a University is how it must be defined. It is maybe the most international university of the East Coast, and its level is improving year after year. Moreover, The University of California, Irvine has been the cradle of most of the greatest High Technology Projects of the recent years. Nowadays, it is the main promoter of the F.W.M.A.V. Project.
Departments
One of the most important characteristics of the F.W.M.A.V. Project is its structure. It has been designed to increase its efficiency and its effectiveness, and be able to support also more than 50 students if it needed. However, the most important section of the Project is the Engineering Department. It is composed by two groups: The Mechanical Group, and the Electronics & Control Group. If you want to know more about the Project’s Structure or the research done by each of the two Engineering Departments, there is more information bellow:
Project’s Structure
Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle Project stands out above the rest not only for his research and innovation, but also for his Project’s Structure. Have a look to our Main Structure and give us your opinion!
Mechanical Group
Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle mechanism is the most important part of the Project. However, there are lots of challenges to beat. Have a look to our research and follow us in our progress!
Electronics & Control Group
Electronics and Control are crucial to make the F.W.M.A.V. flies. Good test rigs, light and efficient electronic circuits and a powerful control are its their target. Learn more in his group page!

About
“We will improve your future by looking to the nature itself”
– FWMAV Vision –
As defined by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a M.A.V is an aircraft that is less than 15 cm or 6 inches in length, height, or width. These micro aircrafts are meant for indoor reconnaissance and surveillance as well as many other applications. A special type of MAVs is the flapping-wing type that flies like birds or insects (depending on the size). Flapping insects exploit unconventional aerodynamic mechanisms to generate high lift at ultra-low Reynolds numbers. They also exploit unconventional stabilization mechanisms to stabilize their bodies in flight and overcome gust disturbances. The main goal of this project is to design, build, and fly a Flapping-Type Micro Air Vehicle that is capable of hovering (similar to large insects or some birds).
Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle Project is the result of a great group of researchers whose passion has been to discover the future of aviation by looking to the nature itself. One of them, Prof. Haithem E. Taha, decided some years ago to continue the research started by other university researchers and government organizations, like D.A.R.P.A. Nowadays, before two years of the project’s birth, F.W.M.A.V. Project has had more than 30 students working on it. We are a group of national and international undergraduate, graduate and PhD students. The project is still growing and also its future.
The aim of F.W.M.A.V. Project’s website is to take all this research and gave it freely to the scientific community. We want to increase the passion for the application of the nature rules to the engineering world, as well as the rest of the fields. We invite you to join us and help us to fulfill this achievement, contact us and learn more about the project, or at least follow us in our way to the future!
